Ricki Goldman: Two experimental video data analysis tools designed for researchers, teachers, and learners to negotiate meanings of video within online social networks are Orion-1 (1999) and Orion-2 (2006). In Orion-2, users create projects and work in teams sharing and repurposing video while layering their Points Of View-ing (POV) by using shared tags with ratings, annotations, and links. Each data entry can be coded using a top-down or a bottom-up “tags-onomy” structure. A related feature exports the numerical significance measures of each tag (Goldman-Segall, 1993) to a spreadsheet for quantitative analysis, enabling narrative, ethnographic, as well as quantitative coding of individual video stars or constellation-clusters.
